Photographer’s Caption: This photo was taken in the village of Siumu in Upolu, Samoa. It depicts the uncharacteristic reaction of a blue starfish to the complete exposure of its habitat during extreme low tide. The starfish seeks refuge under a coral as more than four hundred square meters of coral is exposed to the sunlight, an occurrence that is new to this area. This photo perfectly depicts direct impacts of climate change on oceans as extreme weather events are intensified over time, exposing ocean ecosystems to the elements, causing the demise of coral reefs and subsequently species such as the starfish. Species that rely on healthy oceans end up suffering. This demonstrates that climate change and oceans are intrinsically linked.
