Warrior on the Coastline

Photographer’s Caption: The Lonely Planet voted Fiji as one of its “Best in Travel Destinations for 2016,” further enhancing the role that tourism plays in Fiji’s economy and resulting in 792,320 tourists visiting Fiji – a 5% increase from 2015 statistics. Unique beaches, such as this black sandy beach found on volcanic islands, provide a playground for those with wanderlust for nature’s rare beauties. Climate change poses a direct threat to the beaches of many Pacific Island nations and related tourism activities, as waves carve their territory over land, inch by inch, weakening the foundation of the sturdy trees that once stood as warriors protecting the coastline. Today, this lone warrior stands on the seaward side of a popular Fijian resort, trying its best to withstand the threat of rising sea levels.
