Event Notes: Background In COP 22, the high-level Global Climate Action Champion, Ms Laurence Tubiana, launched the 2050 Pathways Platform bringing together countries, regions, cities and companies with a view to catalyse greater ambition and ensure collective problem solving towards a decarbonized world. The 2050 Pathways platform was established with the intent of supporting actors in preparing and implementing net zero GHG, climate resilient, sustainable development pathways. Developing robust 2050 pathways is necessary, if we are to ensure that we meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement. To ‘achieve a balance between anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gases in the second half of this century’ all stakeholders will need to take action and support each other by sharing knowledge as well as enabling each other to foster greater ambition. Objective of the event This event will act as a one-year stock take for the 2050 Pathways Platform. The event will bring together various stakeholders to share and discuss progress in the development of long-term strategies, including lessons drawn from domestic processes and regional efforts in the elaboration of these strategies. The event will also articulate the growing support that countries, cities and businesses are showcasing towards development of these strategies and how these strategies can play a key role in the next ambition cycle of 2018-2020. The event will deliberate on how 2050 Pathways Platform can continue to support front-runners in their efforts to lead the rest of the world. The platform is already supporting the Republic of Marshall Islands to elaborate its long-term strategy and will bring first lessons from this exercise. The platform will also announce the launch of a Pacific 2050 Pathways Package that is meant to support and build capacity within the PSIDS to develop their respective strategy and enable them to carry forward the legacy ‘Majuro Declaration for climate leadership’. Speakers The event will bring together high-level representatives from national and local governments, international organizations, the private sector and civil society. Logistics The event will take place on Monday, 13 November 2017 from 18:30 – 19:45 in Room 6 of the COP23 Bonn Zone and it is open to all conference participants. Questions about the event should be addressed to cop23presidencyevents@unfccc.int.
