Event Notes: 2017 has seen a succession of catastrophic hurricanes in the Caribbean region, causing loss of life as well as destruction homes, businesses and infrastructure. Extreme events such as Cyclone Pam (2015) and Cyclone Winston (2016) have led to similar losses in the Pacific region. A consequence of these events is to lower the resilience of affected nations to adapt to future extreme events as well a range of other climate change impacts. This side event explores the challenges of increasing resilience to climate change against a backdrop of extreme weather events. It will also examine the latest scientific evidence of the connection between climate change and underlying conditions which may alter the frequency and intensity of such disasters. The session aims to facilitate learning between SIDS as well as engaging regional agencies and climate scientists in exploring the implications of cyclone events for climate policy and finance.
