Event Notes: Moves to phase out coal-fired power generation are gaining momentum around the world. In the last few weeks, the Netherlands and Portugal have committed to phase out coal by 2030; Canada and the United Kingdom have set out plans for a global alliance on coal phase-out; and since 2010, more than half of the coal plants in the USA have either closed or committed to close in the next decade. In total, 23 countries and states have committed to phase out coal-fired power and US$432 billion worth of capital has left the industry this decade. Despite this momentum, analysis by experts such as the International Energy Agency (IEA) shows that to meet the Paris Agreement objectives, industrialized countries will need to further accelerate their efforts – and that the European Union needs to completely phase-out coal-fired generation by around 2030. Europe has seen more and more efforts by civil society organizations, progressive businesses, investors, think tanks, cities and communities to speed up the replacement of coal with cleaner energy.
